Why simpler works better
The best skincare routine is the one you do every day. A twelve-step shelf looks impressive and gets abandoned in a week. Three steps, done daily for months, will do more for your skin than any product you use twice.
Step 1: Cleanse
Use a gentle face cleanser, not body soap or shampoo, which can leave skin tight and dry. At night, wash off the day’s oil, sweat and sunscreen. In the morning, a rinse with water is often enough if your skin isn’t oily.
Step 2: Protect
Every morning, a moisturizer with SPF 30 or higher on your face, ears and neck. If you only do one thing, do this. Sun exposure is the biggest controllable cause of lines, uneven tone and loss of firmness, and it works on you on cloudy days and through car windows too.
The two-minute version
Morning: rinse, then moisturizer with SPF 30+.
Night: cleanse, then one targeted step.
Step 3: Target
Choose one active ingredient for the one thing you most want to change, and use it most nights:
- Lines and firmness: peptides such as Matrixyl 3000 and GHK-Cu are gentle and suit daily use. Retinoids go further on texture but can irritate, so build up slowly. See peptides vs. retinol.
- Oil and visible pores: niacinamide, or a gentle salicylic acid (BHA) a few nights a week.
- Dull, uneven tone: vitamin C in the morning, under your sunscreen.
Give it 8 to 12 weeks before deciding whether it works, and take a photo on day one in the same light. Memory is a poor judge of slow change.
Shaving and your skin
Shaving is a light exfoliation every time, so be kind to the skin afterward. Skip aftershaves heavy in alcohol and fragrance, which can sting and dry the skin. If an active stings on freshly shaved areas, move it to your nighttime routine.
Choose formats you’ll actually use
Most men already have a skincare habit they never think about: a deodorant stick and a lip balm. Solid sticks work because there’s nothing to measure, nothing to spill, and nothing left on your hands. The same idea works for skincare. A twist-up stick lets you put a targeted step exactly where you want it, along the forehead lines, around the eyes and mouth, along the jaw, in about ten seconds.
Common mistakes
- Washing your face with body soap.
- Skipping sunscreen because it’s cloudy or you’re “only driving.”
- Starting five new products at once, so you can’t tell what’s working or what irritates.
- Quitting a new step after two weeks.
The bottom line
Cleanse, protect, target. Two minutes a day, done consistently, beats any elaborate routine you won’t keep. If firmness and lines are your focus, read our guide to GHK-Cu for men next.
